Chapter 15

“How long do you think they will make us wait?” asked the dark-haired elf.

Matte looked at her with eyes that clearly said, “be quiet.”

After exiting the dungeon, we gave our 40% to the guards waiting outside. They congratulated us, and we went about our way. Corin and the rest of the Verdant Watch went back home. They were already planning to visit the woods to hunt and get acquainted with their new level and items. I asked for them to wait for me, but Corin gave me a sly grin.

“Maz’rael, I know ya helped us against those Wood Gnolls and the dungeon, but we’ve been hunting these woods without a healer for some time. We’ll be fine, I promise ya.”

I left it alone. Lassic and I had to be at the Mages’ Guild, anyway. I almost went home, but Lassic said I could shower and get a change of clothes at the guild house.

“Besides, a lot of things are going to change for you after you become an Initiate,” he said with a knowing smile.

As soon as we walked to the front door, Erin, the small high elf with black hair, frantically waved at us. Matte, who was in his monk outfit, stood next to her with two others we hadn’t met. He merely bowed his head to us with his own wooden staff at his side. Looking at him now made me realize what was so familiar to me about him. He looked like a beefed-up airbender.

“…but then everything changed when the fire nation attacked,” came unbidden into my head, and I started snorting while covering my mouth.

“What’s so funny?” Lassic said with a confused look on his face.

The others looked just as puzzled, and it almost made me burst out laughing. But they wouldn’t get the joke, and the guy hadn’t done anything to me to deserve being laughed at, so I lied.

“I was thinking about something that happened earlier.” Then I stared at Matte. “How long have you guys been out here?”

“Long enough,” he answered. “It’s already a minute after the assigned time. You would think-”

Then the door opened, and a tall figure garbed in black, with a face masked halfway by a hood, stood silently before us.

“Come.”

Then the hooded figure turned its back and began walking further into the building. We all looked at each other, stunned at the suddenness of it.

“This is where we part, Maz’rael. I’ll see you at the cafeteria later; they’ll show you how to get there.”

Then Lassic began walking away to the south side of the building.

“I guess we follow him,” said Matte. Then he started walking into the building, and the rest of us followed.
